Getting children with autism to answer questions and talk about things when they are not present can be challenging for teachers. Many questions that we ask, such as What did you have for breakfast this morning?, go unanswered. Watch Sarah, an autism program teacher, use picture prompts to get James to answer a question. Notice how she fades the picture prompts to move him toward answering without cues. Later, you will see James answering the question in another setting WITHOUT ANY PICTURE PROMPTS! This is a great first step in getting him to talk about things when they are not present.
