A “Smart” Way to Use the “Elf on the Shelf”

Do any of your students have an elf that visits them at home and hides in a different spot each day? Here’s an idea that teachers can use to help students answer questions about things that have already happened:

1. Have parents email or text you a picture of their elf in the daily “hiding spot”.
2. With the picture ready on your smart phone (behind your back), ask your student: “Where was your elf hiding today?”
3. If your student doesn’t answer within 3 seconds, show the picture on your smart phone and have them label (tact) the elf’s hiding spot.
4. Immediately ask the question again WITHOUT the picture present to see if they can answer on their own!
