Teacher-Created Activity to Practice Language Skills:  B-I-N-G-O!

When students are learning to name and select items when given descriptions of them and not their names, be sure to generalize those skills to the natural environment.  Teacher-created BINGO can ensure that students are given opportunities to practice targets specifically chosen for them.

    I thought this “Bingo” game was so basic that it works! I liked the way the teacher used common object that the young students recognized. I liked the idea that the disks were given to them as needed rather than sit in a pile in front of them. I noticed that they were praised appropriately and not overly. It showed that they were expected to recognize and know the names of these objects. It seems that anyone can create this based on your own knowledge of the given population. I created a similar game for a student who is struggling with how things go together. Give the picture of the object and present several pictures of objects that go with it. Example: a mop: then a bucket, water, some kind of recognizable soap, and a few other items that do not go with the mop. He struggles with putting the objects together connecting them. I also gave him pictures of items related to performing on stage such as theater lights, curtains, camera as well as other unconnected pictures. We used camping as a theme, riding a bicycle as a theme, playing basketball etc. The idea is to choose high interest themes. This helps with language for older students. This student is a 4th grader.

    Wow! That is a neat idea. It promotes both expressive and receptive language. The students were engaged and enjoying the lesson.
